Generative AI floods and dilutes the market for books

A research paper analyzing 14,419 self-published fiction books on Amazon from 2023-2026 found that while AI-generated books comprise a large share of the catalog, they capture a disproportionately smaller share of sales. However, AI-generated books are increasingly gaining market share over time and occupying top-ranking positions previously held by human-authored works, causing revenue per book to decline across most genres. The study reveals that generative AI can reshape creative markets through sheer volume rather than quality, with particularly severe impacts in genres with high AI adoption and Kindle Unlimited availability.
