A developer has released an early preview of GEFS, a crash-safe, copy-on-write file system originally written for 9front, now being ported to OpenBSD. The port is not production-ready and data loss is expected, but the developer states the remaining problems are reasonably understood and welcomes community testing. Key challenges remaining include implementing proper consistency protocols, reworking error handling for OpenBSD's requirements, creating userspace tools, and adding features like hardlinks, kqueue support, and NFS compatibility.
