Nearly 44% of America's billion-dollar startup founders (unicorns) were born outside the United States, with India leading as the top source country with 90 founders, according to Stanford research analyzing 1,078 founders. International startups that relocated to the U.S. showed significantly higher success rates, with Israeli startups being 9x more likely and Indian startups 6.5x more likely to achieve unicorn status compared to those remaining in their home countries. Beyond founding teams, U.S. unicorns employ talent globally, with only 38% of employees at California-based unicorns actually located in California.
