For Most of the World, Open-Source AI Is the Only Way Forward

Yann LeCun, Meta's chief AI scientist, argues that open-source AI is essential for global AI sovereignty and cultural diversity, warning that letting a few proprietary Western and Chinese companies dominate AI infrastructure threatens democracy and human rights. LeCun is leading Project Tapestry, a federated collaborative initiative that allows countries to contribute to training a global AI model while preserving data sovereignty by only exchanging parameter vectors.
