After Fisker Inc. filed for bankruptcy in June 2024, leaving 11,000 Ocean SUV owners with vehicles that lost critical software functionality, the owners organized and reverse-engineered the proprietary software themselves. The Fisker Owners Association formed as a nonprofit with 4,000 members who built open-source tools, negotiated bulk parts purchases, established repair networks, and created an independent software support ecosystem to keep their cars functional. This grassroots effort transformed what could have been worthless vehicles into a volunteer-run operation that accomplished what the failed manufacturer could not.
