The developers of a map engine have released earstrip, a faster polygon triangulator library that converts map polygons into triangles for GPU rendering. Their ear clipping algorithm is 14% faster than earcut in C++ and 1.4-2.1 times faster in the browser, capable of triangulating 3.7 million polygons in under 500 milliseconds. The optimization was achieved by recognizing that GPU rendering doesn't require the mathematically optimal Delaunay triangulation, only simple triangle decomposition suitable for flat fills.
