Researchers at Cognition successfully factored RSA-260, a 260-digit number, setting a new record for the largest publicly solved RSA factoring challenge and surpassing the previous record of RSA-250 from 2020. Using an AI software engineer called Devin and a GPU lattice siever achieving 10x cost efficiency improvements over previous methods, they demonstrated that hyperscalers could factor RSA-1024 numbers at approximately $30 million each, though RSA-2048 remains computationally secure. The work highlights how AI agents can dramatically reduce entry barriers for complex computational research that would traditionally require teams of specialized experts.
