Experiencing writing at our recent Chinese calligraphy workshop

A recent Chinese calligraphy workshop led by Visiting Fellow Roland Buckingham Hsiao at the VIEWS research cluster provided participants with hands-on experience in writing practices, emphasizing that research into calligraphy involves not just theory but also practical, observational, and embodied learning. The workshop introduced traditional Chinese calligraphic styles and explored how aspects like aesthetics, performance, emotion, materials, and technique all contribute to defining calligraphy, with participants practicing seal script and cursive script to understand how physical execution shapes written forms.
