European digital ID wallets are a gift to Google and Apple

European governments are rolling out digital ID wallets that rely on Google's Play Integrity API and Apple's device attestation services for security, which reinforces these companies' control over their ecosystems and excludes users of alternative operating systems. This approach contradicts the EU's stated goals of breaking tech monopolies and building open digital public infrastructure, while potentially violating the Digital Markets Act. An open alternative, Android's Hardware Attestation API, exists but is being ignored by governments that are effectively becoming enforcers of private corporate policies.
