Europe's Largest Unions Demand Right to Cancel Work on Days Above 30C
Major European unions representing 12.6 million workers are demanding legislation to protect employees from dangerous heat, calling for employers to suspend work when temperatures exceed 30°C for physically demanding jobs and 32.5°C for lighter duties. The push comes after western Europe experienced its hottest June on record, with research showing approximately 130 million European workers face annual heat stress exposure resulting in roughly 277,000 injuries and 230 deaths. The UK's Trades Union Congress has similarly urged the government to introduce maximum workplace temperature limits, as Britain currently has no legal upper temperature threshold despite having a minimum of 16°C.
