Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS

The Dutch government is developing DAWO (Digitally Autonomous Workplace Organization), an open-source alternative to Microsoft built on NixOS, designed to strengthen digital autonomy and reduce dependency on proprietary software. The initiative brings together government, industry, and society to create replaceable building blocks for operating systems, cloud infrastructure, AI, and collaboration tools that are secure, verifiable, and inspectable. The project emphasizes open collaboration, data protection, and innovation while allowing each component to be independently audited and replaced.
