Drones built to look like birds evaded detection at Air Force tech exercise
|
Ornadyne's O1 ornithopter drone, which mimics a bird's appearance and wing-flapping flight mechanics, successfully evaded detection by sensor systems at the Air Force's "Game of Drones" exercise in September. The small, quiet drone weighs 1 pound, can fly over 6 miles for more than an hour, and is designed to be mistaken for an actual bird by both humans and counter-UAS detection systems. The successful test represents the first time the U.S.-based manufacturer demonstrated its drone's ability to hide from competing detection technologies.
