Intel's 8087 floating-point coprocessor, introduced in 1980, enabled microcomputers to perform floating-point calculations up to 100 times faster and became the basis for the IEEE 754 standard used in modern computers. The chip contained 40,000 transistors and featured a specialized high-speed binary shifter that was critical for floating-point operations such as aligning decimal points during addition/subtraction and executing transcendental functions. The shifter used a two-stage barrel design—shifting 0-7 bits in the first stage and 0-7 bytes in the second stage—that balanced performance with the space constraints of the silicon die.
