John Coltrane sketched a geometric diagram combining the circle of fifths with chromatic scales to visualize harmonic relationships, which his mentor Yusef Lateef later referenced in his scale collection. The diagram reveals the underlying chord structures of Coltrane's composition "Giant Steps" through interconnected lines and shapes formed by the circle's notes and scale degrees. Though Coltrane never formally explained the diagram, musicians have since attempted to decode its harmonic secrets by analyzing how the circle maps relationships between musical intervals and chords.
