Claude Fable 5.1 made me a nice animated pelican

Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1, which shows significant improvements on scientific benchmarks (52.6% on Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1) compared to previous versions. Simon Willison tested the model's ability to generate an animated SVG pelican at different reasoning effort levels, finding that lower settings skipped reasoning entirely while higher effort levels produced increasingly detailed outputs, with the "xhigh" setting taking nearly 8 minutes and costing $1.83 to generate a more thoughtfully designed pelican illustration.
