Vishal Garg, the CEO of Better.com who infamously laid off 900 employees via Zoom before Christmas 2021, was fired in August 2026 and is now seeking to return to his position. Garg claims he was ousted just as the company was on the verge of a major turnaround, having rebuilt its business around AI mortgage processing and partnerships with major companies like Intuit and OpenAI after the refinancing market collapsed. The company's valuation has plummeted from $8 billion during the pandemic boom to $300 million today, though Garg says annual sales are recovering and the company is nearing profitability.
