British polling shows strong public opposition to government access to encrypted messages, with 93 percent believing they have a right to private online conversations and two-thirds distrusting any government—current or future—with such power. This sentiment crosses political lines and persists even when people learn about incidents like Apple's withdrawal of Advanced Data Protection from UK users following a government request. Only 12 percent of respondents supported the government secretly ordering companies to provide encryption access without disclosure.
