A University of St Andrews researcher has published a peer-reviewed critique in Nature arguing that Microsoft's February 2025 quantum computing breakthrough claims are invalid due to flawed Python code, omitted raw data, and cherry-picked results that support their thesis while ignoring contradictory findings. The scientist claims Microsoft's Topological Gap Protocol software contains basic coding errors and that the company misrepresented its findings to peer reviewers, suggesting they are "centuries, not decades" away from a functional topological quantum computer. Microsoft has maintained that its work is sound and subsequently announced a next-generation quantum chip called Majorana 2.
