Bez: Generating a browser engine from specs and tests
Bez is a project that automatically generates a web rendering engine from specifications and browser tests rather than building one manually, potentially democratizing web engine development by reducing the engineering cost from hundreds of engineers to a fraction of that. The generated engine can be customized to include only the web features actually needed for specific applications, making it smaller and faster to embed, while staying synchronized with spec changes through automated regeneration rather than manual rewrites. Early testing shows the approach is viable, with the engine's layout matching three major browsers (Chromium, Firefox, WebKit) on over 94% of test cases, and even uncovering real compatibility bugs like Firefox's different pixel rounding approach.
