Benjamin Franklin's Alter Egos Gave Him the Most Freedom

Benjamin Franklin created dozens of alter egos throughout his life—including the widow Silence Dogood, the unmarried mother Polly Baker, and the almanac writer Poor Richard (Richard Saunders)—that allowed him to express controversial ideas and challenge authority with a boldness he could never achieve under his own name. These personas enabled Franklin to critique social injustices, evade censorship, and promote human progress through satire and wit.
