AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link

Google Play has rejected updates to AnkiDroid, a free open-source flashcard app with over 10 million installs, because the app directs donations to Open Collective, which holds 501(c)(6) tax-exempt status rather than the 501(c)(3) status Google requires. Unless resolved, AnkiDroid will be removed from Google Play worldwide (except India and Russia) on September 11, 2026, and the developers are seeking clarification from Google on whether 501(c)(6) tax-exempt status qualifies under their donation policy.
