A 24-year-old Sri Lankan migrant worker, Anojan Sivarasa, has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for a Facebook comment deemed blasphemous after someone screenshotted and reported it to authorities and his employer. He was initially given a five-year prison sentence under cybercrime law, but prosecutors requested he be tried under Sharia law instead, leading an appeals court to increase his sentence to death. His family and human rights organizations, including Humanists U.K., are calling on their governments to intervene and pressure Saudi Arabia to overturn the sentence and repeal its blasphemy laws.
