AI is dramatically accelerating AI research

Anthropic has crossed the threshold of "dramatic acceleration" in AI research as defined in its Responsible Scaling Policy, with capabilities progress doubling over the past year primarily due to AI systems automating R&D work. A METR investigation found that AI automation is the major driver behind this sustained faster pace of capability improvements, suggesting significantly shorter timelines to advanced AI than most external researchers have previously projected.
