A study of 27,000 Chinese students found that those using AI tools achieved 18% higher homework scores but performed 20% worse on proctored exams compared to non-AI users, suggesting that AI may improve short-term performance without building lasting learning skills. Similar research from the University of Pennsylvania showed students using AI excelled in practice sessions but gained no advantage on closed-book tests, indicating that reliance on AI may hinder students' ability to retain knowledge independently. Experts warn that while AI can support learning when used intentionally, overreliance on it risks preventing students from developing critical thinking and cognitive skills.
