Researchers Faulhuber, Petersen, van Velthoven, and Voigtlaeller have disproven the Heil-Ramanathan-Topiwala (HRT) conjecture by constructing a non-zero Schwartz function and specific coefficients that satisfy a linear relation between time-frequency shifts, resolving a long-standing open problem in time-frequency analysis. The counterexample extends just beyond previously known positive results and was obtained with responsible use of AI assistance alongside traditional mathematical argument. The work demonstrates that non-trivial linear relations among time-frequency shifts can exist for smooth, rapidly decaying functions, contrary to what the conjecture claimed.
