5x faster Edge Functions: V8 isolates to Firecracker MicroVMs

Netlify has rebuilt its Edge Functions infrastructure, migrating from a hosted execution service to MicroVMs running within its own edge network, achieving approximately 5x faster performance at the median (5-6ms down from 25-40ms). The new architecture, developed in collaboration with Unikraft, improves latency, security, and reliability while maintaining full backward compatibility with existing Edge Functions code and workflows. With about a billion Edge Functions running daily on Netlify, this infrastructure upgrade enables the platform to handle tens to hundreds of thousands of requests per second with minimal overhead.
