In the early 1980s, Commodore Canada created a uniquely Canadian product—the Northern Telecom Commodore Phone bundled with a VICModem—to circumvent strict Canadian telecom regulations and the country's hardwired telephone infrastructure. Bell Canada's monopoly and an obscure regulation requiring phones to remain fully functional at all times forced Commodore engineers to develop the VIC-1605 adaptor switch, which allowed users to toggle between the modem and telephone connections.
